City in Stone
In an age long past, before the land was sundered in two, the city now called Overlook was merely the surface dwellings of a great dwarven metropolis that extended deep into the earth. Today, most of the ancient tunnels are abandoned, sealed away, or lost. However, a full quarter of Overlook‘s population lives in the City in Stone, the warrens between the City Above and the City Below. Most of the underground population is dwarven, although there are strong gnomish and halfling communities. The City in Stone is not a racial ghetto, and it isn’t remarkable to find humans or even elves or eladrin living there.
The main thoroughfare through the underground city begins at the exit to the City Below, several hundred feet from the falls, and leads in a slow spiral up through the stone to the City Above. A maze of tunnels and corridors extends from this broad walkway and form the neighborhoods. Many of these tunnels exit to the Wall, ending in a sheer drop. Most of these dangerous openings have been sealed away, but not all.
When the dwarven city was the center of a great empire, the royal chambers were renowned as the greatest architecture in the world. However, no one has been able to discover where those chambers are now. Most believe that the chambers collapsed during the Sundering, when the entire metropolis was split in half, but there are always rumors of vast riches to be found, perhaps deeper into the maze of tunnels, perhaps beneath the City Below.
